After Tim Russert died, we lost another germ in glamorous world - Ruslana Korshunova who was a 20 year old super model with incredible looks, but today she fell to her death in what police are calling an apparent suicide. A model who walked runways around the world and graced the covers of fashion magazines fell from a Manhattan building Saturday in an apparent suicide, New York City police said.

Ruslana Korshunova, known for her distinctive long hair and green eyes, was apparently killed in the fall at 2:30 p.m. onto busy Water Street outside the Financial District condo building where she lived.

It appeared she fell from the balcony of her ninth-floor apartment, police said, where a large hole was visible in construction netting hanging on the front of the 12-story building.

Investigators were still examining the scene late Saturday, but a police source said there was no sign of a struggle in the apartment. It was unclear if anyone else was in the apartment at the time of the fall or if a suicide note was found. The city medical examiner is to determine the cause of death.

Mahmoud Nakeeb, 45, the building doorman, said he arrived for work about 4 p.m. to find Korshunova’s sheet-covered body in the middle of Water Street.

“She’s a very sweet girl. She was always smiling. I never see her depressed,” Nakeeb said. Korshunova moved in about two months ago, renting the one-bedroom apartment, which had previously been converted from a studio, from the condo owner, he said.

Korshunova, 20, was originally from the former Russian republic of Kazakhstan, according to published reports. Since 2003, she has appeared on the covers of European editions of Elle and Vogue magazines, and in ads for DKNY, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs and other companies.

Nakeeb worked the night shift on Friday and was on duty when Korshunova came home alone between 4 and 5 a.m., dressed casually and apparently undisturbed. “She said ‘Hi.’ She always said ‘Hi,’” he said.

Korshunova was represented in New York by IMG Models, a top-tier international agency that lists supermodels Kate Moss and Heidi Klum among its clients.

An IMG representative confirmed Saturday that Korshunova was a client but declined to comment further. Korshunova’s condo board president also declined to comment.

Giddens seems like a good fit in the Tony Allen role for the Celtics, a player who coach Doc Rivers said could contribute on the defensive end right away. Giddens, 6-foot-5 and 208 pounds, played for two seasons at Kansas before transferring to New Mexico. He averaged 16.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists as a senior while shooting 52 percent from the floor.

The knock on Giddens, seen as a player with top-15 talent, is his work ethic and attitude. He was also suspended by New Mexico during his junior season for “not being a good teammate.” But you can bet that the Celtics veterans, fresh off the NBA championship, will be quick to put this rookie in his place if he doesn’t fall in line.

In the second round, the Celtics selected 7-foot-1 center Semih Erden from Turkey, although the odds of him ever wearing a Celtics uniform are probably slim. Boston also acquired the rights to 47th pick Bill Walker, a forward from Kansas State, from the Washington Wizards. According to ESPN, Walker was being compared to Vince Carter before suffering a pair of ACL injuries, one to each knee.

Analysis: A huge surprise here. Giddens might have lottery-type talent, but he had so many off-court issues that his stock tanked. I guess Danny Ainge is willing to roll the dice, given his veteran squad. If Giddens grows up, this will be a great pick. But it’s a big if …

Notes: Played two years at Kansas before transferring to New Mexico. Sat out the 2005-06 season.

Positives: Excellent athlete with deep 3-point range. Big-time leaper. Long arms allow him to play bigger than he is. Quick release on his jumper plus great elevation on his jump shot make it hard to stop. Has become an excellent rebounder for a guard.

Negatives: No real midrange game to speak of, though he’s done a better job at New Mexico of getting to the line. Not a confident ball handler. Not a good defender, mostly from lack of effort, though his lateral quickness isn’t great either. Questionable attitude. Not sure he has a real feel for the game.

Summary: Has the talent to be a first-round pick … but scouts are worried about work ethic and attitude. He’s been a knucklehead for most of his career and most teams won’t want to deal with the hassle for a second-round pick.

The Boston Celtics have chosen guard J.R. Giddens of New Mexico with the 30th pick of the NBA draft.

The Celtics went into Thursday night’s draft with the last pick in each of the two rounds after winning the championship last week in a six-game series against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The 6-foot-5 Giddens was fourth in the Mountain West Conference with 16 points per game and first with nearly nine rebounds per game as a senior. Giddens spent his first two seasons with Kansas and his last two with New Mexico.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has said it would be difficult for the player the Celtics draft in the first round to contribute as a rookie.

Kalitta, 46, was pronounced dead at a hospital in Old Bridge after his car lost control during the fourth and final round of qualifying at the National Hot Rod Association Super Nationals, according to statement by the association.

Witnesses said Kalitta was speeding at an estimated 300 mph during the National Hot Rod Association Super Nationals when the engine of his Toyota Solara exploded in a ball of flames.

The driver was killed after he lost control of his vehicle,” said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a spokesman for the State Police.

Lynette Davis, a spokeswoman for Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge confirmed that Kalitta was brought to the hospital at 4:56 p.m., but she would not release further details pending the notification of family members.

Spectators at the track watched as Kalitta’s car exploded, hit a sand trap, then vaulted over a protective catch fence. A slow-moving ambulance took him away.

Kalitta, 46, of Palmetto, Fla., was a two-time Top Fuel champion (1994-95) had 18 career victories, 17 of them in the Top Fuel class.

He began his racing career at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in 1982.

His father, Connie Kalitta, the legendary driver/team owner known as “The Bounty Hunter,” was his co-crew chief, along with Glenn Mikres. Kalitta’s cousin, Doug Kalitta, competes in the Top Fuel class.

He is survived by his father, wife Kathy and sons Corey, 14, and Colin, 8.

NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Brad Keselowski — a native of Rochester Hills, Mich., about 20 miles away from Kalitta’s hometown of Mount Clemens — learned the news from a television report.

“That really hits close to home,” Keselowski said after winning the pole position for tonight’s race at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis. “(He was) a friend of my family’s, and I send my thoughts and prayers out to him. That’s tough to hear.”

Last year, Funny Car driver Eric Medlen died after an accident in a testing session at Gainesville, Fla.

Laura Benanti is the first actress to have played the role of Gypsy Rose Lee in a Broadway production of Gypsy to win a Tony Award for her performance.

When asked why she believes she won the award when the other actresses who played the role did not, Benanti said, “Well, I guess you have to look at who else was in their [Tony] category. And, Arthur Laurents, Patti LuPone and Boyd Gaines — that’s probably why.”

Sandra Church originated the role of the wallflower-turned- stripper in the 1959 Broadway production of Gypsy. Subsequent Louises included Zan Charisse (1974), Crista Moore (1989) and Tammy Blanchard (2003).

As for future plans, Benanti said, “I’m happy where I am. I’m not a huge planner. I kind of let the universe bring me what I want to. . . I’m just happy where I am right now.”

Prior to Gypsy, Laura Benanti was most recently on Broadway in The Wedding Singer. She played Claudia in the Tony-winning revival of Maury Yeston’s Nine, and she received Tony Award nominations for her performances in Swing! and the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. She was also seen in The Sound of Music, Time and Again and the City Center Encores! mounting of Wonderful Town. Benanti’s regional credits include roles in A Little Night Music, Man of La Mancha and A Winter’s Tale.

With his plain-spoken explanations and hard-hitting questions, Russert played an increasingly outsize role in the media’s coverage of politics. Hail to this great “pal” of all.
